Hopkins Festival Field Trip July 2010
Visit to Grave of Gerard Manley Hopkins in Glasnevin Cemetery
On Sunday July 24 th 2010, a wreath was laid on the Grave of Gerard Manley Hopkins on behalf of Members of the Hopkins Society both past and present.
Father Paul Andrews SJ ably assisted by Father Fergus O'Donoghue SJ (Editor of Studies) and Father Fergus Hutchinson OP, Prior Newbridge College, led proceedings recalling the moment 20 years ago when Desmond Egan read his poem, Hopkins in Kildare to a huge crowd who had assembled that day to commemorate the dead poet.
Bob Welch and Mrs. Welch (from Coleraine University) visited The Hopkins Garden in Monasterevin. They were distressed to report that the tree planted by the Hopkins Festival Committee in 2009 in memory of his son's tragic death had been removed, vandalised, perhaps. I assured him that this seemed unlikely.
