When: Each year during the last week of July, since 1987,.

Where: In Monasterevin, Ireland, descibed by Hopkins as 'one of the struts and props of his existence'.

Why Workshops?

Each year, since 1987, scholars, artists and enthusiasts have come to Monasterevin to celebrate Hopkins's creativity. Over the years, arising from the synergy of this enthusiasm, Workshops have developed and are now a central part of our Summer School.

Creative Writing Workshop

Share your creativity with a group of fellow-travellers in the Creative Writing Workshop. Each year, a Poet or established Writer shares insights with you; reads your Poems or Writing and offers constructive advice.

This is our oldest Workshop and it is still as popular as ever. Participants bring samples of their work and, in a positive and supportive atmosphere, suggestions are made and possibilities investigated.

In 2005, our Workshop will be conducted by Poet Desmond Egan , whose 18th book has just been published to much acclaim. He will be helped out by Cecile Oumhani and other writers, poets and scholars from around the globe.

Multilingual Translation Workshop

In the multicultural environment of The Hopkins International Literary Festival, with visitors from across the globe, a Translation Workshop naturally suggested itself. But this is a Translation Workshop with a difference, a Multilingual Translation Workshop. Each year, participants, under able guidance, explore the challenges of translating a Hopkins poems into global languages. A useful way to gain further insight into the poetry that forms the central interest of our Summer School.

We believe our Multilingual Translation is a unique and innovative addition to our enjoyment and exploraton of the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins. We also think there is no better way to really get into the very heart of any Hopkins poem. Come to Monasterevin - the Multilingual Translation Workshop will ensure that you will know more about at least one of Hopkins's poems than you ever thought possible!

Words and Music Workshop

In 2004, we introduced a Words and Music Workshop, mainly at the prompting of some of our younger visitors. Conor Mahony , will deliver this highly successful Workshop with help from visiting musicians. Conor is attracting a growing reputation with the release of his second CD with songs written, performed and sung by himself. The Hopkins Summer School is proud to have such a genuine talent to take charge of the Words and Music Workshop, one of the highlights of the 18th Festival.

Tie-Dyeing Workshop (2003)

In 2003, the School featured a Workshop / Exhibition of TIE DYEING by two Japanese experts. For those who don't know tie-dyeing involves the fixing of colour in home-made fabric using herb dyes.

We were privileged that Keiko Sekiyama, a leading artist of Japanese traditional tie-dyeing was be in charge of the Workshops. Keiko was a big 'hit'. She used antique fabrics and dye them with traditional herb dyes. Shirts, garments, cravates etc. which are made were works of Art in themselves and extraordinarily beautiful! Some of those made were actually on sale for a lucky few.

Early boooking for all Workshops Essential !
