Gerard Manley Hopkins International Summer School
Join the Multilingual Translation Workshop
Each year, since 1987, scholars, artists and enthusiasts have come to Monasterevin to celebrate Hopkins's creativity. Over the years, arising from the synergy of this
enthusiasm from all over the globe, the Translation Workshop has evolved. Now, it has become a central part of our Summer School.
In the multicultural, multi-lingual, environment of The Hopkins International Summer School, a Translation Workshop naturally suggested itself.
Each year, participants, under able guidance, explore the challenges of translating a Hopkins poems into global languages.
A useful way to gain further insight into the poetry that forms the central interest of our Summer School.
Here's how the Translation Workshop works
The group works together on the challenges and problems of translating Hopkins - and poetry in general. This helps everyone gain greater insight into the Hopkins poem
selected.
For the 18th GM Hopkins International Summer School the poem selected for the Translation Workshop is:
' I wake and feel the fell of dark, not day, ...'
